The iron carrier in the furnace

Dear Reader,

I have recently commented on the use of an oxygen carrier in a fluidized bed furnace to improve the combustion of the fuel, I have looked up the coordinates of the solid. We will now discuss some of the details of the solid.

The solid is a layered oxide, the solid has layers of titanium and layers of iron atoms which are separated by oxygens. Here is a picture of several unit cells using a spacefilling model.

The iron has a distorted octahedral coordination environment, as can be seen in the following picture. I sincerely hope that my readers like the rusty iron texture on the iron atom.

Likewise the titanium has a distorted octahedral coordination environment, the chances are that the iron is in a high spin complex as the ligand field of the oxygens would be weak. This will reduce the stability of the octahedral environment over a grossly distorted octahedral environment. Here is the picture of the titanium atoms coordination environment.
