Sofa trouble

While in a shoe shop I was talking to my wife who point out to me that in the UK a horrible problem with sofas has popped up. This is a tale which might be almost as bad as Procrustes and his nasty bed. For details of the tale see http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1028097/This-baby-burned-red-raw-sofa-giving-toxic-fumes-As-investigation-reveals-hundreds-victims.html and http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7961969.stm

The problem revolves around a substance called dimethyl fumarate which was used as an anti mold treatment for the sofas. It is a michael acceptor, which reminds me of the fact that there is something nasty about many michael acceptors.

CS ‘gas’, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, ethyl cyanoacrylate, dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, methyl vinyl ketone, divinyl sulphone and divinyl sulphoxide are all substances which have a very great ability to irritate the eyes, lungs, skin and other parts of the human body. This is becuase they are electrophiles which can react with many biomolecules.

I will tell you more about the michael reaction another day.

Go on, Have your say !
