Well some years ago in my final year of my PhD I saw a chart at Nottingham where the family trees of a series of members of staff were traced as far back as bunsen. This made me think of the fact that it might be possible for me one day to have academic descendents.
I recently got a student who I have been told to supervise and make sure that the young lady is guided through the PhD process so I am thinking more about supervision than before. I also recall what happened to some of my undergrad students who I acted as a day to day supervisor for. In sincerely hope that my students will do well in the world and I would be glad to hear from them.
I am still in contact with my PhD supervisor over ten years after having finished my PhD, I wonder which students will still be in touch with me in twenty years time.
One of them went off and got a good industrial job while another one ended up as a chemistry teacher in the far east. If you want to read about school chemistry then go and visit her blog.
